I've been having problems with some of my backups, resulting in apparent success but empty backup directories. (We backup the C$ share using samba/smbclient with BackupPC. The failing client runs Windows XP SP2.) From BackupPC's perspective, the symptoms are NT_STATUS_INSUFF_SERVER_RESOURCES entries in the error log and smaller than expected backups. In my case, I've also resolved the root cause of the problems: a memory leak in VirusScan 8.0i was causing my nonpaged kernel memory usage to grow from about 12MB after booting to over 100MB after a full backup. At some point, my machine started generating errors in the system event log ("Srv 2019: The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty.") and became unresponsive. I've now installed VirusScan 8.0i patch 11, which seems to have solved my problems, as described in kb45505 on http://knowledgemap.nai.com/ However, I feel that BackupPC should have treated NT_STATUS_INSUFF_SERVER_RESOURCES as a fatal error, unlike NT_STATUS_SHARING_VIOLATION and NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED which are "expected" errors. |
