I don't know if anyone posted something like this before, but it might
After installing BackupPC on stock RedHat8.0 system I noticed backup
hangups for clients that were offline. Even when they went online, the
backup proccess did not start and eventually the stuck backup requests
blocked out any new requests, so no more backups were started at all
(even with clients that were online).
After a while I noticed that the problem is the ping command. It seems
that the ping command from the iputils-20020124-8 package gets stuck
after not receiving a ping reply (if you specify the -c 1 command
option). The backup processes got stuck due to waiting for the ping
command to finish.
I solved this problem by simpy replacing the ping command with another
one from the netkit package found at ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/Networking/netkit/
I don't know if this was a bug in the netutils package or a particular
feature of that ping program, and newer version of the netutils
package might behave correctly.
Hope this helps someone :)
