[BackupPC-users] rsync problems

As the BackupPC user I can successfully rsync the /etc directory from a
remote server (having already exchanged ssh2 keys) using the following
command:

rsync -av -e ssh root@...:/etc backupdir

However I am unable to use rsync within BackupPC v2.1.0pl1 to get the
remoteserver's /etc directory.  I keep getting an email with the error
'fileListReceive failed'.

Any ideas on how I should configure the config.pl?

Yes.  Just make sure you use different install paths, data
directories, and cgi directories.

I ran into this problem after an update of Rsync yesterday. (to
v2.6.3pre1). It looks like it was the --exclude option, as removing
that fixed the problem.

I have created an entry in bugzilla.samba.org here:

There is a security hole in rsync 2.6.2 which is why I got updated to
2.6.3pre1, so hopefully they'll fix this soon. In the meantime I have
downgraded back to 2.6.2.

No. The upgrade asks if you want to replace your config.pl file with the
new (and blank/default) upstream version.

There is no automatic merge of the two, which is a bit of an annoyance.

If I cared more I would have filed a wishlist bug with the maintainer
since there is an existing script that does the upgrade, supplied by
you, as I understand things. :)

Anyway, to the OP: you need to manually merge your changes from
'/etc/backuppc/config.pl' to the file
'/etc/backuppc/config.pl.dpkg-dist', then rename the latter over the
former.

I tried a long time to run BackupPC on RedHat Enterprise with the
webinterface but still its not working.

 

Checked mod_perl that one is running.

Running webserver as apache and backuppc as backuppc user

Use .htaccess file

 

I changed the httpd.conf

I had a similar problem that cropped up after an `apt-get upgrade'. It
turned out to be caused by a package putting an apache conf file in
/etc/httpd/conf.d/, and it changed something that caused the CSS file
to not be included correctly.

Check for new files in conf.d, this may be a similar problem.

I'll try rsyncd, then.  Any suggestions on how I might get the remote
server setup if I were to use rsync, though?

"Unauthorized..." is just the banner served up when an ssh connection is
established.

[BackupPC-users] BackupPC_sendEmail patch

We have a couple of 'hidden' files which we use to control various 
nightlyjobs.  One of them is called .NOBACKUP which we have in the 
backuppc/pc directory.  I get a complaint from BackupPC_sendEmail and 
wondered if this patch is acceptable:

Debian package seems to have missed off:
	$Conf{CgiCSSFile} = 'BackupPC_stnd.css';

because by default it doesn't point to a css file

Doesn't seem to but adding
	$Conf{BlackoutPeriods} = [];
works fine

I've installed backuppc on a REDHAT8.0 with apache 2.0.40-11.9 and mod_perl
1.99_05-3.
The daemons runs well but when I try to access the web interface I got the
following error:

There are two problems:

  - BackupPC is running ssh and rsync, rather than rsyncd.
    Set $Conf{XferMethod} to rsyncd to connect to your
    rsync daemon.

  - Ssh is returning the error "Unauthorized access is prohibited",
    and that's why the backup fails.

Make sure that $Conf{BlackoutPeriods} is set to [], rather
than undef in the main config.pl file:

    $Conf{BlackoutPeriods} = [];

[BackupPC-users] Running BackupPC_nightly only after queued backups are complete

Normally, when the BackupPC_nightly command is queued, no new backups 
are started until the command has been completed. For my setup that is 
rather inconvenient. I run a weekly full backup of some 30 servers 
($Conf{MaxBackups} = 6) starting Friday evening that takes 36 hours to 
complete. With the default behavior, the queue is interrupted twice when 
BackupPC_nightly waits for all current jobs to complete. That adds 
several hours to the total backup time, meaning the backup might not be 
done until Monday morning.

So I made a slight modification so that new backups are held only when 
BackupPC_nightly is actually running, not when BackupPC_nightly is 
merely waiting to be run. Here's a patch, in case anyone is interested.
