> are their any more > specifics you need worked on and such ? > Once we get communication working, then it'll be easier to get the fun stuff assigned. But we gotta plow through the boring stuff to get their. Maybe we can get that going before Christmas, so we can do the fun stuff over the next few weeks... -Josh __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Check out Yahoo! > do you want this all developed in vis C++ ? You can develop it in whatever environment you want. I'll be using VC++6, but as long as you follow standards and stuff, porting it to other environments shouldn't be a problem. -Josh __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? > Well atm im learning and using Opengl, If You know of a good tut other then the directx 8 documentation please let me know, btw directx 8.1 is out, im about to grab the sdk for that if its already been released > The guys in college swore by this book (which I own, but haven't gotten through it. Its pretty big). Its called "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus" (Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672313618/qid=1008701568/sr=2-1/002- 2000835-8485621). The guys at school that wrote games/graphics with DirectX said this book was enough to learn it all (there isn't 3D in it, but we won't be using 3D anyway). I'm not opposed to OGL, if we can make object wrappers (I'm a C++ programmer, not a C programmer). But I'd still like a good package for communications (so it'll take care of the overhead, and protocol and stuff; and have shoutcast support). -Josh |

OK guys, lets get started. I'll be working on the 'areas'. What I need is someone that knows DirectX well (I need at least one person that knows how to handle DirectDraw, and one that can handle DirectPlay, both with DirectX8a). We need to get a client speaking to a server, ASAP. Then with logins and chat, then with complex speaking (sending objects and stuff). Any volunteers to learn this stuff? I can get to it eventually if no one knows, and no one wants to learn. But I'm more of a "background" coder than a UI guy. And I'm not super-familiar with DirectX8a. I'm using that version for the easy "shout-cast" ability. Also, coding style. Sorry if this offends you guys, but being project leader, I can only read certain coding styles. First and fore-most. If you are starting a block of code, the brace goes on the -next line- like so: for ( ; ; ) { // code here } NOT LIKE THIS: for ( ; ; ){ // code } I just can't read the second way. Next thing, "if" -always- gets a brace. Even if it is just a one liner. Its a pain in the rear to debug if that one-liner becomes a macro or inline function (if you don't know why, I'll explain it later). Also, use 3-spaces (not tabs), for your indents. Most coding environments will let you set your tab to this. AND LOTS OF COMMENTS! Don't forget the comments! There's 18 people (prolly more once we get going) working with the code... lets make it readable! The next I might let you by with, but it makes the code look better. For stuff in parens, put a space before and after the parens (unless its just an open-close): if ( ( blah < 3 ) && ( class1.istrue() ) ) { // blah } OK. Any questions? Ask to the list! So, who wants to volunteer for what? I'll send out an email today or tomorrow about how the areas are being designed, if you want to help with that. Other jobs will be: For beginners, set up the "Player" and "Character" classes. Maybe we'll use some inheritence here, so we can also have "Creature" classes. Setting up "Object" classes. Setting up the "Weather" system. Everything (areas, players, objects, etc...) will be put in a DB (prolly MS Access), so I need someone to help me make a DB Schema. I'll also need someone to make good wrappers to DB classes for this game, so it'll be simple code in the load/save functions of our major objects. Working with "Character Affects" (once the character class is finished). Working with Creature AI (I can really help you out with this one). That'll hold until after creature and areas are done. Anything you want to work on will always be seriously considered (and I'll give it to you, if its over your head, I'll just add people in to help you out). What we need right away is communications working. Once we get that, then we can get players to log in, and the rest will be placed in while testing goes on. Plus, players can start getting used to the new game... Then once areas and creature code is in, we can get people building (building is going to be a VERY long process now. They'll have to build large areas, plus versions for the time of the day, plus a version for each season. A tough job, but it'll make the game that much more unique). I also want some sort of design done BEFORE you code. Whether it is UML or just basic design. Send it to this list. OK, lets get this thing started! -Josh |
