#169 Context Menu in Computer, Drives and Recycle Bin

I have just installed AxCrypt on my Windows Vista laptop. It is a very nice application – small, light and straight to the point: it does everything you really need.

There is one detail that bothers me though. Almost every program I install on my computer tries to include itself into the Context Menu, which gets extremely crowded over time. So, I always have to clean some items that are really not needed. AxCrypt inserted itself in the Context Menu of the Recycle Bin, Computer, Start Menu and Drives, where it is not needed and does not do anything. I would really like to remove it from there and leave it only in the Context Menu of Files and Folders.

Is there any way to tweak the Registry to do that? I couldn’t find any obvious Shellex entrances that would allow me to do that and programs like Glary Utilities show only Files and Folders settings, which I actually need and want to keep. If there is a way to remove those unnecessary Context Menu entrances, please let me know how to do that.

Thank you.

    Thank you for the input.

AxCrypt is currently by design visible in other spots than just 'files'. One reason for this is that AxCrypt does not have any other user interface. While I can agree that strictly speaking it's a violation of the 'context' menu since the options in question are not really about that context, it's convenient.

Unfortunately there is no registry entry for that, and to be honest this is the first I've heard about it being annoying. I'm afraid I will not be making this a high priority, although I will certainly take the general view into account now and in the future - don't clutter things up. AxCrypt itself does try to keep it's menu as clean as possible which is why some options are not available there although there have been requests to include them.

    Best regards,

Thank you for your detailed reply.

What I really like about AxCrypt is that it is a light, straight-to-the-point program, with a small footprint on the computer. You are right - there is actually no need for a separate User Interface. Keeping less clutter in the Context Menu would go along the lines of this strategy and increase the attractiveness of the program. In any event, I think about using AxCrypt only when I am looking at files and folders, not when I am checking Recycle Bin, or clicking on the Computer icon or Drivers icons. And folders and files are everywhere on the computer, so you actually do not loose the visibility of the program by removing it from unnecessary places.

I hope you will consider this subject in the future updates. At the very least it would be good to provide an option to customize the Context Menu appearance of AxCrypt for some people who might be a little obsessed about keeping their computer clean and neat (like me).

Talking about less clutter - I was also thinking about Languages entrance in the Context menu of AxCrypt. I do not believe that people change languages of the program twice a week. Usually this preference is set once during installation and that's it. May be it could be moved to the "About" section? Just a thought.

By the way, I have just found another ticket on the subject of Context Menu - Axcrypt/bugs/420 (Axcrypt in Recycle Bin Context Menu).

In any case, any direction your decision will go, thank you for a great program.
