Hi all, I just tripped over avidus recently ... would it be unreasonable to ask you if there was any synergy with joining forces with gnucash? (www.gnucash.org) The reason I ask is that gnucash is in the middle of a big revamp (new gui, financially correct transaction handling, reports etc.) and it would kind of make sense to have accounting and stock tech analysis all in one ... ? Part of the redesign means that we've completely whacked how we store stock prices, and now would be a really good time to let us know how to do that. Another thing .. we are using guppi for graphing; guppi is getting more & more slick, you may want to check it out ... http://www.gnome.org/guppi/ --linas |

PyQt 2.0 introduces changes to the way enum's are defined. I have updated Avidus to work with PyQt 2.0, and therefore the cvs version will no longer build with PyQt 1.3 or earlier. Regards, Wayne |

Currently in the Technical Analysis, Trading system software field that are a large number of programs, from in house software used by large companies; to commercially available, expensive (depending on your viewpoint) software like Tradestation; to shareware apps, or cheap commercial apps. All have different levels of functionality, some support for user written programs (a la Easy Language). Then there is a large aftermarket community of programs written to use the software (i.e. Tradestation plugins, libraries, scripts...) However, there is no open source, freely available alternative to any of them. This is the motivation behind freemarket and avidus. My dream for Avidus is that it becomes a standard in the industry - usable by average joe investor to do some research; usable by john q. daytrader as a real time app; usable by Company X to port their tradestation plugins to. This is my dream, and perhaps it will never happen, but I think it is a good dream. Now, to get to my point - the reason I chose the MPL was to allow all of the above scenarios to be enabled. I would like to encourage commercial support of Avidus - and if the GPL is used, this becomes extremely difficult. Apache is probably a good example of this scenario - the base program is open source, yet licensed so that companies can exist to add extra features, sell support, and provide a value added solution to the base Apache (while at the same time, encouraging all changes go back to the free apache project. Now, this is my point, finally: - I would propose that the base components and libraries for freemarket be released under the LGPL (or equivalent). The GUI and user programs can be left GPL'd if that is so desired. The main component that I believe should be LGPL'd (or BSD'd) is the data server(s). It is through becoming ubiquitous that a program such as a data server becomes truly useful. If every program has a different data server, there is a significant amount of duplication of effort - i.e. writing a plugin for quote.com must be done for each project. Greetings, Project Avidus is now available. I have released a file module that gives a preview of what is to come. I would appreciate any and all comments you may have regarding installation, features, usability, etc. If you are interested in helping out, update from CVS and send in some patches. I am planning on rewriting the Chart module to use the new qt 2.2 canvas module, which should provide the ability to draw trendlines, add text, etc., and hopefully provide a speed boost for scrolling smoothness. Cheers, Wayne |
