It would be nice if github and gitlabs projects could be restricted projects (not public) so that teams and individuals could use this to work on their data until it is ready for publication.
If the "ro_cache.txt" file is used to refer to the local copy, private git repos can be used. I've been working to make diffs visible between the copy used and the upstream version.

I think this will be best supported by having a local copy which is maintained with Git pulls.
Private is a keyword which hasn't appeared once on this ticket, making it hard to find. I did find it though.
