There's general agreement that there should be a new version of the Autoplot logo. It's branding has been fine, but I've noticed over the years that people mistake the A for a pair of dividers, and not the pair of electrified hammers. For this reason I anticipate using the divider metaphor for precision, and then keeping the colors and data-lighting-bolt to tie in with legacy branding.
This ticket is to discuss the design, and to explore any issues that could come up.
Here is the original (and current) logo.
Here's the svg I was playing with in inkscape.
Hmm, I don't know. If you turn your head sideways, it looks like a bird eating a worm.
I think that was Ivar's response as well, actually... (He didn't tell you to say that, did he?!?) We need to de-bird it... And bug Sebastian for feedback, he's on the committee...
Nope, I came up with that image myself. Inadvertant images are important to avoid.
Ok, here's my thoughts... the circle at the top would look better smaller so that the "legs" can have a taller and steeper angle similar to the letter "A." Though their endpoints should remain the same. I also feel that the more jagged "lightning" in the original logo better represents the discreet nature of data you might plot rather than an audio-file looking "wave?" I would also try two drafts with and without the circle filled in as that amount of yellow at the top is a bit distracting.
I've attached my attempt at the logo to illustrate my points.
I'll draw something up! If that's a vector-based graphic (Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw), could you send me a .svg? I like your lightning bolt...
Kristoff had a suggestion too (Kristoff, can you post here?), with more detail on the caliper arms.
I just noticed that https://lists.nasa.gov/ uses a divider. Not to say that I think this is a problem...
The calipers I used for my suggestion were stolen pretty shamelessly from
the Stonemason's Logo.

I've been using this logo, and I think we should accept it as the final. Needs centering, etc... Also Sebastian suggested that we keep the old lightning, and use the UIowa yellow.

Here's the logo, with the hole in the top.
I've created a new set of logos, in sftp://jfaden.net/home/jbf/ct/autoplot/study/551logo
Here is the set, with multiple sizes from 16x16 to 1024x1024 (for Mac Platypus release) and Inkscape svg files.

A new logo has been in use for over a year now.
