I use gentoo and the "mail" command does not exist but
    "mutt" does. :)

I suggest that only one mail program is used in the script,
rather than mixing "mail" and "mutt". In fact they behave
the same on the CLI, so it should be possible to make it
configurable for the user which mail program is used.

"mutt" is used if you wich to have the backup files attached
    to the report email..
As far as I know the "mail" program doesn't support adding
attachments from the command line.. If thats not correct
please let me know how its done.. :)

The mail command indeed gives you problems with multiple attachments, therefore the use of mutt is necessary. Under gentoo the package that contains mail is mailx.
