mysql.general_log exclusion not working

I'm trying to backup several mysql servers. Some are giving me the error message:

Error: Couldn't read status information for table general_log ()
    mysqldump: Couldn't execute 'show create table `general_log`': Table 'mysql.general_log' doesn't exist (1146)

I tried to exclude this table, but that doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions what else I could try to avoid this error message?

I'm having this (or a very similar) issue as well. Error:

mysqldump: Got error: 1017: Can't find file: 'general_log' (errno: 2) when using LOCK TABLES

I've added general_log to the exclusions as well.

I needed to run mysql_upgrade to fix this one
