As for the feature you're requesting; There is currently no way to parse
the input of the messages received - my boss
got a bit nervous with the thought of running commands based on an SMS I did
not implement it. I do, however, think it
would be a useful feature, and being an obstinate sysadmin I might implement
it anyway ;)
I have some plans for the smssend.pl script that is the backbone in the
whole SMS send/receive part of Autocheck. It
would be nice to eg be able to request status information etc via an SMS -
or run arbitrary commands. If I get really clever
I might even implement a remote shell over SMS - although this would get a
bit expensive if you get a lot of output from a
The solution to your problem is an action plugin!
Create an entry for a process-check in the RUNFILE - eg add the following
host = pingu-uk
hosttype = linux
protocol = local
processes = \ESC\ ["sendmail", "named"]
This will make Autocheck check for the sendmail and the named processes. If
they fail they will trigger an action in the ACTIONFILE. Add eg the
following bit to the ACTIONFILE:
action = mail plugin:restartsendmail/plugin.sh
mailrecp = henrik
Now, create the file in the plugin-path above. Note that the plugin has to
be below the MESSAGEPLUGINS directory specified
in the ac4.config file (if it is not specified it defaults to
current-directory/message-plugins, so the path in the above example
would be current-directory/message-plugins/restartsendmail/plugin.sh). The
plugin will be run on the target system specified
in the RUNFILE.
The plugin can be written in any language - if it is not a binary file it
has to have the shell specified as the first line (as with
normal shell-scripts, eg #!/bin/bash).
An example of the plugin.sh script mentioned above could look like this
(note that this requires autocheck to be run from
/usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q
I hope this helps. I will not have time to implement any changes to the
sms-part before January as I'm going to leave the
office in 40 minutes for my Christmas holiday :) You can however send me
emails and I will try to reply to them through our
PS! I will copy this email to the autocheck-users list.

It does indeed.
We've been having a few problems with our mail server lately, perhaps that
Whilst I'm on the topic, can Autocheck restart a particular service
(sendmail in this case ;-) ) via SMS message?
Oh, and do I need to send an additional message to subscribe to the mailing
