I took my au_vortex.h header file and changed:
#define MAX_FRAGS 4
#define MAX_FRAGS 8
And now my sound doesn't "glitch" as much when I'm hitting the hard drive. Does this sound like a reasonable thing to do?
I also experimented a bit, and could go up to 16 FRAGS.
Sound still skips a bit under higher load (especially with
X-Windows programs switching windows), but is smooth
now most of the time. Beyond 16 the module stops with
'cannot allocate memory'.
