Leland, surprisingly, not all Germans use KDE ;) But to be fair, KDE is really big here in Germany, because many use SUSE, and KDE has been the default for SUSE all the time. By the way, I live like 15 miles away from SUSE headquarters, but I digress.... I do use Gnome (I'm on Ubuntu Dapper right now), but I never experienced the problem you describe, but might be that I just didn't notice them, because I use the scroll wheel most of the time anyway....
