I hate to suggest the obvious, but I've had similar problems in
saving on a Mac if I failed to notice that the "Save To" location was
full or, more likely, that I'd, for example, navigated to a CD to
import a clip and Audacity (or other program) was now trying to save
to the same CD; my Mac was subtly alerting me to the impossibility of
this by graying out the "Save" button. It also grays out when I try
to save to Network (because I don't have one) and to John Mayer's
Computer, I guess because that's not specific enough.
When I close Audacity I'm prompted for the same "Save" buttons that
simply saving within the program brings up. You could do a second
project and experiment with it.
I know this isn't likely to be your problem, but I missed the first
part of your thread and I, for one, have been baffled by the
grayed-out Save button more than once. One of those "D'oh!" moments.
