Hello, I want to report a bug that the "zh.po" should be named "zh_CN.po" instead. This bug applied to both 1.2 and 1.3 branches. Please fix it as soon as possible and release correspond bugfix builds. Current filename will cause zh_TW translation not be used by program. And most zh_TW users cannot read zh_CN, they are different language. Thanks. You-Cheng Hsieh |

Sorry, I saw this several days ago when you posted the same message to fee...@au... , but haven't had time to respond. With regard to the 1.2 branch, I doubt we want to re-release for that. We haven't been developing 1.2 for several years and its Chinese translation hasn't been modified for five years. I've no problem with renaming for 1.3, unless someone knows a reason why this has happened. The web site uses zh_CN for Chinese (Simplified), and there is no zh_ZH locale in Widgets which would justify using "zh.po". However, is there an actual problem in 1.3.12 viewing Audacity in Chinese (Simplified)? I can't read Chinese, but clearly the test that displays in the interface for Chinese (Simplified) is not the same as that for Chinese (Traditional). The zh.po has not been translated since December 15 2009, but seems over 90% translated. Any comments, Richard? Gale |

For users whose OS locale is zh_TW, audacity will provide zh_CN gui by default because the wrong po filename. It happens for both 1.2 and 1.3. Thanks. You-Cheng Hsieh |

Some of the developers are strongly against re-releasing for a small change (you either have to bump the release number, or accept the release number on the site no longer has the same contents as before). If you are concerned about the issue for 1.2, then it would be possible to insert web site text on the 1.2 download pages just for the affected locales, explaining the problem and what to do about it (though I'm not yet clear what the problem is in 1.2 - see below). > > However, is there an actual problem in 1.3.12 viewing Audacity > > in Chinese (Simplified)? It happens for both 1.2 and > 1.3. How can it happen for 1.2? In 1.2 the user must choose the interface language on first run. Do both the Chinese (Traditional) and Chinese (Simplified) preference choices produce Chinese (Simplified)? In 1.3.12 the system locale determines the Audacity language. I'm surprised the zh_TW locale provides zh_CN gui when there is a zh_TW.po. I haven't tested it, but obviously you would have to do so with an initialised audacity.cfg (remove all the content except "NewPrefsInitialized=1" at the top of the file, then restart Audacity). Does this move for 1.3 mean performing a separate move on the older zh.po files which have the /sf-cvs/trunk/audacity-src/locale path? Gale |

Sorry, I'm not sure about how things work out for older zh.po files. Could you please specify in further detail? Or should I not to worry about that? Regards, You-Cheng Hsieh |

OK, so that I'm clear... A first time user of Audacity 1.2.6 is running in zh_TW locale. They run the Audacity executable for the first time and they see this in the dropdown: http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/audacity_first_run.png ? There is no default before user makes that visible choice, except in the sense that the default is English if Audacity can't find the language folder specified in that first run dialogue. If that's the only problem, I really don't think it justifies a re-release of 1.2.6. For a start, it's unclear if 1.2.6 even builds any longer on current compilers. I hardly think it's even worth mentioning on the web site translation for zh_TW, but if anyone wants to do it, go ahead. I suggest it goes above "System Requirements" on each of the three 1.2 download pages. On another issue, there is a broken zh_TW reference page for 1.2 in SVN: http://code.google.com/p/audacity/source/browse/website/trunk/htdocs/locale/zh_TW/reference.html It's only a partial translation, not linked to anywhere, and was committed without the images folder to go with it, so is virtually useless. I e-mailed the author (Milo) about it but got no answer, so I'm intending to delete that redundant "zh_TW" folder unless anyone wants to work on that document. I think time would be better spent on translating the wiki-based 1.3 Manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Main_Page which has no Traditional or Simplified Translation at all. If anyone would like to help, please ask me off list for an account on that Wiki. > > In 1.3.12 the system locale determines the Audacity language. I strongly oppose the opinion that zh_CN and zh_TW are two languages, they have different shape in some parts of the characters but have the same sound. As one of the translator of the zh_CN po file, I'm OK with the suggest to rename zh.po to zh_CN.po as other software does, but there's no display problem on zh.po file, only the default display(which should be recognizable by Traditional Chinese users) may annoy the zh_TW users, for they've been opposing the simplification of Chinese for a long time. > Thanks. > > You-Cheng Hsieh > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Centralized Desktop Delivery: Dell and VMware Reference Architecture > Simplifying enterprise desktop deployment and management using > Dell EqualLogic storage and VMware View: A highly scalable, end-to-end > client virtualization framework. Sorry, but most people knowing Traditional cannot recognize the Simplified, especially for such application with specific professional purpose. With Simplified Chinese provided as default for zh_TW users, it causes lots of difficulty promoting audacity. Renaming zh.po to zh_CN.po will just resolve the problem. Thanks, You-Cheng Hsieh |
