I think we had a tentative agreement to do this before, but rather than spring it as a "reminder" just before 2.0, I'd like to ask for confirmation exactly what he plan is. IMO there is considerable benefit in moving the SF.net FAQs: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq to the Manual FAQ: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ Doing so means they can be worked on by more people (or have suggestions easily attached to them on "Talk" pages). Peter copied much of the SF FAQ content to Manual Wiki a year or so ago, but having to maintain these in two places for different audiences hinders me improving them/adjusting them for 2.0. I think we could move the FAQs at or soon after 2.0, but if we want the FAQs to reflect 2.0 at the release of 2.0, I propose we confirm the decision in principle to move, then only make further FAQ changes to the Manual Wiki. As always, the major block in moving pages from SF.net to Wiki is the loss of translations, but if we had volunteers to do it we could start copying the translated FAQs (e.g. for Dutch, http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?lang=nl ) anytime, as a starting point for updates. I would hope that by getting translators started on some Manual translations such as this that we stated as mandatory, this might "break the ice" and get more (or different) people interested in helping. Of course in the longer term, some more formal translation method on Manual Wiki might help make the task more attractive. Gale |

Unless there's persuasive reasons not to, I'm +1 Steve |

We should still keep the translations up on sf.net until they are all translated on the manual. We should not just abandon those users who benefit from the translations. - Vaughan On 2/21/2011 6:13 PM, Gale Andrews wrote: > > I think we had a tentative agreement to do this before, but rather than > spring it as a "reminder" just before 2.0, I'd like to ask for confirmation > exactly what he plan is. > > IMO there is considerable benefit in moving the SF.net FAQs: > http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq > > to the Manual FAQ: > http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ > > Doing so means they can be worked on by more people (or have > suggestions easily attached to them on "Talk" pages). > > Peter copied much of the SF FAQ content to Manual Wiki a year or so > ago, but having to maintain these in two places for different audiences > hinders me improving them/adjusting them for 2.0. I agree entirely that translated content (even of outdated FAQs) is better than none and certainly intend that non-English speakers will always have content. I think though the usefulness of translated FAQs is probably overstated for any type of complex issue, where many of the FAQs are linked to untranslated Wiki content. One aim of having FAQs in the Manual would be to link to Manual Wiki content where possible, with an increased possibility that the linked-to content could be translated. However until the translations are off sf.net I think it could be hard to get much motivation for translating updated FAQs. Hence the idea to start copying translations now to the Manual Wiki. It's actually very easy for the content of the Manual to be machine-translated. Just provide a link to Google translate and the user will stop in Google translate in that browser tab/window whatever link they click in the Manual. I think it could be considered for languages supported in Audacity for which there is no translation effort in the Manual.
