Buffer underruns happen when Audacity isn't fast enough to keep up with
all the incoming audio data. You may be able to prevent them by closing
other programs while recording.
You might also get better results with our latest beta-test version,
Audacity 1.1.3. In addition to better recording performance, it also
other improvements, especially on MacOS X:
