I downloaded Audacity .98 but it won't run on my Powermac G3. If I try to
record, nothing happens or the screen turns white and starts shimmering.
Same if I access preferences. A blank window and then the program freezes.
The only way out is to keyboard quit the program. Tried several times and
restarted. Running OS 9.2.2 and 384 RAM.

We've heard similar reports from a few MacOS users. It only happens on some
computers, and seems to be caused by an extension conflict.
You can try restarting with only the MacOS 9 base extensions (using the
Extensions Manager control panel) and then using Audacity. If you'd like to
help us track down the problem, you could add back your extensions a few at a
time, to narrow down exactly which one is causing the problem.
You can also help by sending us a system profile. Open the Apple System
Profiler from your Apple menu, and choose New Report from the File menu.
Make sure that the Extensions box is checked.
Thanks for your interest! We hope to fix this problem soon for Audacity 1.0.
