1) Norton Antivirus background virus scanning can significantly slow down machines used for recording, so ig you're not on the internet you might want to stop that as well.
2) The most likely cause of the freezez is not memory shortage but a problem with the sound drivers locking up, which then locks audacity. You may want to try and trace the sound chipset manufacturer and look for updated drivers.
