I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I think it was only on
the forum, so I'd like to raise it on the QA list for appraisal.
The meters in Audacity are somewhat "unusual" in that the "peak"
indicators only show positive peaks.
Perhaps this is a "feature", or a performance "optimisation", but as
it is usual practice to indicate absolute peaks (regardless of whether
the peaks are positive or negative) they are likely to be misleading
Fortunately the red "clip" indicators do not ignore negative peaks,
but it is likely to be confusing if a user sees the red clip indicator
light up if the meters are well below 0 dB (which would happen if
there were negative peaks greater than 0 dB).
Koz suggested that it may be an oversight, or it's faster that way, or
nobody's noticed, but it's certainly not how I would expect a VU meter
