using Audacity 1.3.2-beta ANSI on OSX 10.3.9 I opened a MP3 file and
tried to convert stereo to mono. Audacity always crashes trying to do
that. Seems to happen with any MP3 file. Any hints which circumstances
might be the cause?

Unless you want to subscribe to our devel-list to discuss Audacity development
issues, please post user issues to audacity-help@... which
list you don't need to subscribe to. I cannot reproduce this on Windows
with the official 1.3.2, or later development build. Do we presume you are
on a Power PC? What does the Track Panel say about the bit format of the file
(e.g. 32 bit float) and the sample rate (Hz)? How long is the imported file?
To convert stereo to mono in other ways you can:
1 Click on the downward pointing arrow in the track panel (above the
mute/solo buttons) to expose the track dropdown menu
then click "Split Stereo Track"
2 Click on one of the tracks and make mono using the same menu.
3 Close the other track by clicking on [X] on the track panel.
This will obviously have in the mono output only the data from one of
the channels. To include information from both channels in the mono
1 Split stereo track using the track panel dropdown menu
2 Click on both tracks in turn and make each mono using the same menu
3 Select both tracks (CTRL + A ) and play them, checking if the
red hold lights to right of the green playback meter come on,
which indicates clipping (distortion). If this happens, move the
gain slider -......+ (below mute/solo buttons) on each track to
the left by the same amount until no more clipping is detected.
NOTE: if the playback meter is not visible, enable it at View >
Toolbars > Show Meter Toolbar.
4 Click Tracks > Mix and Render
