I recently purchased a new laptop, and I downloaded audacity in hopes of transferring my old records and tapes. My problem is, in the "mixer" toolbar, there is no dropdown menu for recording sources (Mic, Line in, etc etc) its  just a greyed out box.  Is it a problem because of "vista" maybe?  Or something to do with the sound card , or lack of.  It works fine on my old computer with windows 98,  and works on my daughters computer with XP.

My dad, who has become an expert at audacity, came to help me with mine, and when he saw this box had no list of sources he said "you have to get that to work, or you won't be able to use audacity"

Is he correct?  Any help would be appreciated

Thank you
