Hi, there could be quite a few reasons for this. First, make sure the
microphone is plugged into the mic socket (not line in) and mic is
selected from the dropdown list in the top-right of the screen in
Audacity. Then check the volume of the microphone in the volume control
/ mixer for your operating system. In Windows XP, you need to choose
'Options' then 'Properties' in the mixer, then choose 'Recording'
instead of 'Playback' (also make sure the microphone is selected in the
list below) to control the recording volume of the microphone rather
than its volume coming out of the speakers. Then you need to check the
volume isn't turned down and it isn't muted.
