Not sure at all  Clayton.

But just before it hung it flashed up the Windows msg about running low
on virtual memory and advising that Windows is adding to the VM this
has often happened on this old PC and usually operates reasonably quickly.

After 10 minutes or so with nowt happening and Audacity well stalled I killed
the  non-responding Audacity process with Task Manager and opened up
Audacity again for  step 3) the 9 minute audio clip test.

Running out of time now as I have to go out shortly, but can test again
tomorrow (with fresh patch?) if required.

Are you sure 2) was a virtual memory problem?

Done:

1) I tested with two 3 - 3.5 minute audio files - both worked fine

2) Tested  with a one hour audio file - Audacity choked and
froze at 1:03:20  processing with 0:07:59 remaining processing
time - but this was because my PC ran out of virtual memory
space (I do only have half a meg of RAM in this engine).

3) Tested a nine minute audio clip - worked fine.

Clayton's patch 4 ought to be better (in principle) than patch 3 (which is in
rc2)
because patch 4 now includes a fix for the crash processing at/near the
start -
we just need as much testing as possible on patch 4 in the next 12 hours to
make a decision.

I had no problems with Clayton's patch 4 on Ubuntu 32-bit or Win 7 x64. I'm
yet
to try on XP 32-bit (on 64-bit hardware). If Peter's reading this, it would
be
great if he could test patch 4 on his XP 32-bit hardware ( see
http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?p=188901#p188901 to download
the build).
