When aterm displays man pages or other programs that
place color codes before/after words, then aterm won't
change colors. It displays odd square shaped characters
before/after the words where color is supposed to
change (see screenshot attached).

Notes: 1) xterm seems to display man pages and other
progs properly 2) dircolors look perfectly normal with
aterm 3) transparent window or not i still have the problem

Are you sure your descrition is correct?

This looks more as if you were using a utf-8 locale, but
aterm doesn't support utf-8 (the only rxvt clone supporting
    utf-8 so far is rxvt-unicode).

The utf-8 thing is possible. So how do I fix this then?

Indeed, the problem was utf-8 based, thanks!
