You pass force_fw=1 as a parameter to insmod? The firmware is required to run the card - I believe it is not stored on the device and needs to be loaded each time. I can't say for certain about Digium's modules but to re-install the firmware for Rhino cards (specifically, rcbfx), you simply pass force_fw=1; they automatically upgrade if the firmware file is a newer version than what's installed. There are several meanings to the word firmware in this discussion and I feel it's necessary to determine exactly what everyone is referring to. Are you talking about loading the firmware in order to run the card, as I know some wireless cards require?
