For a little bit of history, several packages that are currently in the development environment are there because they were part of the original buildroot tree. Some packages (such as wget) would provide functionality that is already present in busybox. There are no real plans to mark packages as unsupported or unmaintained, but that would not be too difficult to do. It's just not going to be near the top of the priority list.
