 page of the set itself that suggests it can use more codecs than just thes=

What I=27m trying to achieve is good call quality with reduced bandwidth co=
nsumption so I would like to try g729 - would anyone recommend a g729 codec=
 =28free and open-source preferably=29=3F I=27ve heard that Intel have a fr=
ee g729 codec but have also heard that there are problems with its stabilit=
y=2E Does anyone have experience with it since my Astlinux box has been roc=
k-solid and has never - so far - crashed=3F

Hi David,

there is only one answer to your question: buy a g729 license from
Digium! This works out-of-box with Astlinux. A nice register utility is
included.

There were already several threads in this mailing list and on the
asterisk-users which discussed this topic in detail (pros and cons,
legal, technical, etc.). Please have a look in the archives.

Ingmar,

  You have some good points here.  Buy the codec - it supports Digium.

  With regards to the original question - why do you need to transcode
at all?  I use g729 quite a bit, and I have not needed to transcode on
an Asterisk system for quite some time.  It takes a bit of tweaking,
but it can be done.
