http://metrix.net/metrix/products/packages/MET-KIT-PBX-I.html OK, I'm sounding like a commercial for Metrix, but this is cool: "The PBX I kit is a tiny PBX powered by Asterisk, the open source PBX. With this kit you can recieve, send, and route VOIP calls. The core of the box is a Soekris 4801 single board computer. It comes with a compact flash card pre-loaded with AstLinux an embedded linux distro designed specifically for running Asterisk on this embedded board... "Because we believe in supporting Open Source telephony Metrix pledges 3% of all PBX I kit sales to the AstLinux project. " My only connection to Metrix is I like Pyramid Linux, and use it in all of my routers and WAPs. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Carla Schroder Linux geek and random computer tamer check out my Linux Cookbook! http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linuxckbk/ best book for sysadmins and power users ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Wow! An whole 3%! Pushing the boat out a bit aren't they? Not exactly a unique product. I've been selling this exact thing locally as the uPBX (in microPBX) http://www.kineticavionics.us/upbx-flier.pdf for quite some time now. I believe that my "kickback" to the project is more than sufficient to the extent that I feel I don't have to brag about it. But if you really must know yes, monies have been exchanged as well as advocacy, testing and other project notables. My point here was not that people give of their monies etc but that they feel that they feel they have to validate themselves. By advertising on ones site that you donate money back to the very project you are trying to sell one undermines the very project itself. It backs up the customers already shaky belief in the product. Just my opinion. Not meaning to start a flame war. Mark PS: has anyone seen my fireproof trousers? It was a simple question, not a flamewar starter. Really! People support FOSS projects in all different ways, whether it's financially or some other way, such as your help on the AstLinux list, and that is a consideration for me when I'm shopping vendors. I prefer that such information be easy to find- I don't know why anyone would think it undermines anything. My customers think it's a good idea to give back to worthy projects. Especially ones that support their businesses. Sure, someone running around yelling "look at me! I donate to $Foo and that makes me a superior being!" is going to raise some eyebrows, and I'm going to avoid them. But that's not what Metrix is doing. It's a simple statement on their product page. It tells me something I want to know, and it sets a good example for other vendors who make money from free/open source software. I like Metrix the company for a number of reasons- that doesn't mean I think yours sucks. It's not a zero-sum game. :) On Tuesday 09 January 2007 08:52, Mark Phillips wrote: > I believe that my "kickback" to the project is more than sufficient to > the extent that I feel I don't have to brag about it. > > But if you really must know yes, monies have been exchanged as well as > advocacy, testing and other project notables. > > My point here was not that people give of their monies etc but that they > feel that they feel they have to validate themselves. > > By advertising on ones site that you donate money back to the very > project you are trying to sell one undermines the very project itself. > It backs up the customers already shaky belief in the product. > > Just my opinion.
