What you are probably looking for is app_sms:
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk+cmd+Sms
It is included in Asterisk 1.4. Asterisk 1.4 is currently in
testing in AstLinux in the asterisk-beta branch in Subversion.
You could build a bootable image from that branch to support SMS via app_sms.
I don't know much about app_sms but it appears that it relies on
ISDN features that aren't well supported in the US. Is this for
Europe or US use (maybe somewhere else)?
