That's the VI[M] text editor. Please have a look here
(http://www.ph.unimelb.edu.au/~ssk/vim/howto.html) for an introduction
on how to use it. Needless to say, it's not like "most" text editors
these days in that you have to select an input mode before you can
actually edit things.
