Hello everyone, Apologies for the cross-post but I want to make sure this announcement reaches as many people as possible. Thanks to the efforts of Lonnie Abelbeck over the past week or so we now have a resource for dynamically building custom AstLinux images directly from a publicly accessible web interface! I can't begin to describe how cool this system is... It supports at least the following features: - Build AstLinux SVN - Build AstLinux 1.0.2 - Build either AstLinux 1.0 or AstLinux SVN with either Asterisk 1.4 or 1.8 - Include some drivers and not others - Upgrade your system directly from this build repository - Automatic notification via e-mail when your custom build completes - Images that match your selections are cached, making them available for download immediately - Plenty more to come (submit your requests please)! NOTE: To keep bots out of this service a username and password have been applied and it is as follows: username: admin password: astlinux The AstLinux Custom Build Engine is available immediately at the following URL: http://build.astlinux.org Thanks again Lonnie! -- Kristian Kielhofner |

Hello everyone, I'm disappointed we haven't done a release in so long. We've been working to develop the interactions between Runnix and AstLinux but have not yet figured out the best way to install Runnix+AstLinux based systems. We've been working on a script to do just that. The idea is simple. Boot from the AstLinux Live CD and install AstLinux to disk from the console. I've built a CD image with this enabled and I would like for some of you to test it, if possible. Standard warnings apply: We haven't been able to test this on much hardware. Make sure you are prepared to lose ALL of the data on your machine before even running this script. We're pretty sure it will work perfectly but just in case... Anyways here's the ISO with the install script: http://astbuild.star2star.com/astlinux-trunk-1820.iso After booting simply log in as root and run: astinstall Remember to eject the CD before the machine boots back up. It should boot Runnix+AstLinux. Let me know if you have any suggestions, problems, etc. If everything goes well you can expect to see and AstLinux release shortly. Thanks! P.S. - Sorry for the cross post but I wanted to get as many eyes on this as possible. -- Kristian Kielhofner http://blog.krisk.org |

Hello Everyone, I've wanted to start a blog for quite some time. I was waiting to get a new site for AstLinux going first. I've started on that and I am looking for feedback: http://www.astlinux.org I just couldn't hold off on the blog any longer: http://blog.krisk.org/ I know the title is lame but there will hopefully be some good stuff covered for anyone interested in AstLinux and related technologies. Let me know what you think! -- Kristian Kielhofner |

Hello everyone, I've been really frustrated by the ancient Mambo install that was astlinux.org. I've been working with an excellent web developer at Star2Star and he suggested (and installed, and customized, and hosted) a much-improved version of the old site. This time we are using Drupal. So far I like it much more! Depending on your DNS situation you may or may not see the new astlinux.org site by going there. One thing you will notice is the login box in the lower left hand corner. This allows me to create accounts for people to modify the site, add content, etc. I've been really happy with the participation of the community and I would be more than willing to create logins for some of the regular contributors around here. Just let me know what kind of stuff you'd like to fix/change/add on astlinux.org and I'll create a login for you if it makes sense. WIth the release of 0.4.6.1 I am hoping that I will be able to branch trunk into 0.5 and work on documenting and refining some of the new features that are available. Now that I have a website I like I might even write some docs for them! ;) P.S. - That web developer at Star2Star is Gabe Shepard. Thanks again Gabe! -- Kristian Kielhofner |

Hello Everyone, I have just released AstLinux 0.4.6.1. The only difference between the last binary release (0.4.5) and 0.4.6.1 is Asterisk 1.2.21.1. As always, AstLinux can be downloaded at the SourceForge project page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/astlinux/ Thanks! -- Kristian Kielhofner |

Hello everyone, As some of you know, Digium has recently upgraded it's G729 registration utility to include SSL and some other enhancements. Unfortunately it did two things: 1) Obsoleted the native uclibc binary that we have been using for some time. 2) Increased the dependencies on glibc libraries. I have created a script and tarball to simplify this: http://files.astlinux.org/astg729-0.1.tar.gz The problem is... I don't have any G729 licenses to test it with! A simple "how-to": cd /tmp wget http://files.astlinux.org/astg729-0.1.tar.gz tar -xvzf astg729-0.1.tar.gz cd astg729-0.1 ./astg729 Then all you have to do is run the register binary (depending on your system, it will be installed in a different place but astg729 will show you when it is finished running). Let me know how it goes! -- Kristian Kielhofner |

Hello Everyone, The AstLinux team is produce to announce the immediate availability of AstLinux 0.4.5. This release took WAY too long and we are working on ways to speed up the release cycle in the future. As the latest release from the stable branch, 0.4.5 has updates and fixes for several core software components. Please see the ChangeLog on SourceForge for more information. The AstLinux LiveCD, VmWare Image and binary images for the Soekris net4801, PCEngines WRAP, generic i586, and VIA can be downloaded from the AstLinux project page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/astlinux/ As always, the AstLinux Development Environment is available from the SourceForge SVN server. I would like to send a special thank you to Darrick Hartman for maintaining the 0.4 branch while I work on trunk - thanks again Darrick! -- Kristian Kielhofner |

Hello everyone, Now that astlinux-trunk has been coming along very nicely, I thought I would try to add support for hard realtime capabilities to AstLinux. If everything works (and there are no problems with zaptel), with a little tweaking this should improve the audio quality on systems with high loads (and probably any system at that) - especially if it is finely tuned and has zaptel cards. The stats: - Asterisk 1.2.14 - Zaptel 1.2.13 - Kernel 2.6.20 - rt patch 2.6.20-rt5 - everything else from AstLinux... If you would like to hack on this, give the astlinux rt branch a try: svn co https://astlinux.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/astlinux/branches/rt astlinux-rt If you just want to try it on something, I made a bootable iso ("make iso" from the devel environment). Get it here: http://www.krisk.org/astlinux/astlinux-rt-r588.iso (sorry about the krisk.org domain - I don't feel like dealing with SourceForge right now) Further reading: http://rt.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/RT_PREEMPT_HOWTO http://people.redhat.com/mingo/realtime-preempt/ http://rlove.org/schedutils/ I'm looking for any and all suggestions from Asterisk code gurus - what things can we do in Asterisk/Zaptel to maximize the potential when running with RT PREEMPT? Thanks, I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say. -- Kristian Kielhofner |

Hello everyone, AstLinux 0.4.2 has been released. Updates include: - Asterisk 1.2.10 - Zaptel 1.2.7 - libpri 1.2.3 - codec_g729a The Digium g729a codec has been included in this release. The codec has not been available since AstLinux 0.4.0 when the C library was switched to uClibc from glibc. A big thank you to Digium for recompiling the g729a codec. Of course you will still need to buy licenses, but at least it is possible again. Thanks Digium! Most of the updates have happened behind the scenes in development. AstLinux is in the process of moving to SourceForge and I am welcoming developers to help out wherever they can. You can check out source code, binaries, and more on the AstLinux project page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/astlinux/ -- Kristian Kielhofner |
