I've found that simply enabling music on hold
(http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/index.php?page=Asterisk+cmd+musiconhold)
and holding the thread in a sleep will initiate hold-like behavior. I
believe hold is usually a phone-based thing, though I don't details on
that. Have you tried just Thread.sleep(n)?
