I have well over 10K subs that I would like to annotate for asteroids and comets, so am looking for suggestions about how to go about this efficiently. I noticed that when running ASTAP from the command line (I'm on an M1 Mac), there is an -annotate flag, but this appears to only be for deep sky objects, not asteroids. Any recommendations aside from lots of point and clicking would be much appreciated!

    Hello David,

Currently under TOOLS, BATCH PROCESSING there is a menu to annotate asteroids and comets. The asteroids are recordered into the header as text lines containing the X,Y positions. So the annotation info is not recordered in the image itself. Additional batch exporting to TIFF will not change anything since the header is stored in the TIFF file. This option is created for tab blinking and export to video. So you can make movies of asteroid movements.

A batch conversion to jpeg is not foreseen but I could consider it. I don't think the -annotate option will export the asteroid annotations. Any new option is probably more accessible from the BATCH PROCESSING menu then command-line.

What do you want to do with the jpeg files? The purpose helps to define any new tools.

    Cheers, Han

    Hello Han,

Thanks for pointing out the batch processing menu, I somehow missed that. I don't need to export to TIFF or JPEG; merely identifying which subs have asteroids is sufficient as I'll be processing those subsequently. so I think I'm all set, thanks!

    Okay,

Note you can switch the header annotations on/off in menu VIEW, HEADER ANNOTATIONS VISIBLE.

Check the annotations before you start the batch. If I remember well the old ones are removed if you redo them.

    Han
