    Hello Han,

Just to let you know that I sometimes encounter an issue when opening some images previously created by Astap.

Original .cr2 > calibrated .fit > plate solved > TG TR TB extracted.

This works pretty well generally, and I get some very robust results with this workflow.
Nevertheless, it is sometimes impossible to open any images of the series. The only solution I found is to redo all the process, which can be very time consuming if you handle more than a couple of hundreds exposures.

By the way, the faulty images can still be opening with other software, with good plate solving and correct coloured photometric data, so I do not think this is a very serious issue.

    Here is a screen capture.

    (See attachment)

    Clear skies,
    Christophe

    Hi Christophe,

Can you share one of the "faulthy images" for further investigation? If they are readable by other programs, it must be possilbe to figure out why it happens.

You could attach one to a posting on this forum.

    Cheers, Han

    Hello Han,

Since yeasterday, I did several other attempt to open archived fits created by Astap.
Some are impossible to open by now, some can be open. Very strange comportment.

Here are two fits that can't be open, from two separate series :

Here I can open all three files. Can you check if the fles are not locked by an other program? Or just copy them to an other directory and try again.

I have copied the files to another directory, then from D: to C:, this is always the same issue : floating point overflow.

What do you mean by "locked by another program" ?

I have noted that the first two files (the corrupted ones) where plate-solved, while the third was not, bcause the stars where too defocused.

I actually use the TG TB TR file with Siril to look closely at them, and also with AstroimageJ in order to get access to the useful ploting functions that this software is offering, but currently none of those soft are in use on my laptop.

Locked, a program can lock an file for exclusive access but that is not the case here since copying doesn't fixes it.

Your using ASTAP version v2024.02.25a. Try the latest version . Maybe this error is only in the old version.

Maybe it is something in your settings. Can you share the astap. cfg file? Just go to the ASTAP File menu, Settings, Save setting as.. Save your setting at your desktop and attach it (astap.cfg) to post here. Maybe that will help me to solve this puzzle.

    Hello Han,

    Here is the astap.cfg file.
I will install the last version tomorrow. Been very busy today because of the fantastic aurora activity last night ;-)

    Clear nights,
    Christophe

    Han,

Unfortunately, de-installing the old version, and installing the new one didn't solve the issue.

I'm pretty sure this issue is related with the plate-solving... something wrong during that process.
    Hmmmm.

    Cheers,
    Christophe

I could reproduce the problem here. You have switched on the azimuth & latitude grid. It produces an error because it doesn't know your geographic position. You could either switch this grid off in menu View (A, h grid) or enter your geographic position in the Asteroid & comet annotation menu (ctrl+R). Then save your settings once by pressing the solve button once or leave the program by File, Exit (end save settings) . This should fix you problem.

In next version I will protect against this run time error.

If you have any other error please tell me.

    Cheers, Han

    Han,

Thank you so much. I'm very impressed ;-) It works again, and there is no longer any issue.

The fact is I can't remember changing anything about A, H grid or anything else of this type of functions. I think I will have to re-read more closely the documentation. I do not use all the available functions, so it may be that I miss some important points somewhere.

    Anyway, Astap is back !

    Christophe
