I discussed comparison of subject viewers in ccdciel@groups.io several months ago and just now getting back to you!
In CCDciel when the image viewer is fitting to the window it displays an image that is much more informative than the what I can get in ASTAP. When CCDciel is not using the fit algorithm the image looks very much like ASTAP. See attached screenshots.
Is it possible to have an option in ASTAP to do whatever CCDciel is doing to the image to fit the window?
Thanks for the interesting observation. Yes I have looked into the differences. In ASTAP I use the Timage control to stretch. CCDCiel does also use the Timage control to display but does the stretching with external code. There is also in CCdCiel smooting algorithm active which only becomes visible if you use tiny image like 60x56 pixels.

If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
See attached the result of viewing a 60x56 pixels image,
Changing it will not be easy and it is only the display. If you export the ASTAP result to jpeg it will also be smoothed. So we talk about improving the display only.
Anyhow, I will have look in the future if I can do something similar. It will be only for displaying.
Thanks Han - yes it would most certainly be just for displaying. Its handy when looking at subs as the faint ROI's pop out better. I grab the RIO stats and copy into my spreadsheet to do all the usual things. Its tricky finding the fainter ROI's with the grainy standard preview - I have to have a stacked imaged up to find them.

I just exported a sub to a jpeg and it worked! It would be really handy to have that as an option on the previewer!
