Well, I don't think it's a 64-bit problem or anything (assuming you're
still trying it on the same box as before) because I just tried the SSL
example on an AMD64 box running FC3 and it works fine.

What exactly do you mean by fail? Is it hanging and unable to connect?
That seems to be what the strace output suggests. If it is hanging,
what is the call stack at the time?

What happens if you try "127.0.0.1" as the target address?
