Unable to contact scanner

I'm using as6edriver-0.5 in conjunction with
SANE-1.0.12.
Both programs were compiled as indicated.
System is a linux-2.4.22-i686-gnu-pc; build according
to the instructions provided by the
linuxfromscratch.org-project.
Scanner is a native Artec AS6E; EPP-support is
activated within the BIOS and also compiled into the
kernel.
Kooka asks for using "as6e:as6edriver" as the default
device but then states it cannot find any
input-device. xscanimage complains it cannot find any
device.
Calling as6edriver directly from prompt with
as6edriver -t produces the output-lines
[quote]:
Unable to contact the scanner. Exiting.

Releasing parallel port.
[unquote]
Scanner is powered up and attached correctly - worked
fine under W2k.
N.B.: When trying to contact the scanner, the green
light on the scanner goes out and I have to reset
power supply afterwards.
Instead my printer (- which is attached to the same
port -) gets activated.

Any idea what's going on ? I'll be grateful for any
help.
