I realised why I was seeing slower times when I tested with groovy 4. I had a whitelist with many non-existent classes. Anyway, the next version should have groovy 4.0.2.

Is there a particular reason for this.
I'm using a groovy feature in a script, that is not available in 2.0 version.
Have you tried replacing the existing jars with those from version 4. An initial test for me makes the sandbox work much slower.
yes, that's what I did. I'm currently using groovy 4.0 within ART. I'll try to compare speed between the two versions.
