the problem here seems to be the "|| die ..." operation. From the
"perlop"-manpage: 

 The "||" and "&&" operators return the last value evaluated 

Ah yes ... that has been a contributing factor. I have tried so many
variations including removing the die altogether, I suppose I must have had
several problems so solving one each time made little difference.
 
But now it works!
