This morning's 0.17.1+ development snapshot is up:
http://armedbear.org/j-jar.zip (just j.jar)
The bugs reported by Dave and Christof (collectively known as bug
637555) are fixed in this snapshot (I hope).
There were various symptoms, but the real underlying problem was that I
used jikes 1.17 to build j.jar for the 0.17.1 binary distribution, and
that didn't work with Sun Java 1.4.1 fcs on either Linux or Windows,
although it worked fine with Blackdown 1.4.1 beta on Linux (which is
what I normally use myself) and with Sun 1.4.1_01 on both Linux and
Windows. To my surprise, the jikes 1.17 version of j.jar even worked
with Sun 1.3.1_05 on Windows, so Sun 1.4.1 fcs may have been the only
The current snapshot is built with javac (from Sun 1.4.1_01, on Linux,
in case that turns out to matter), and I've verified that j.jar (in j-
jar.zip) works with the following versions of Java:
Linux: Sun 1.4.1_01
Sun 1.4.1 fcs
Blackdown 1.4.1 beta
Win2K: Sun 1.4.1_01
Sun 1.4.1 fcs
Sun 1.3.0 fcs
Bug 637460 (sessions don't work) is also fixed in this snapshot, but
that's old news at this point.
I also fixed a fairly serious bug that led to an assertion failure if
you used the 'x' button in the location bar to close the preview pane
of a mailbox.
Finally, I've gotten rid of the bogus error messages that were getting
written to the log when j first started up after a clean install. These
messages were actually benign; they basically pointed out that it was
impossible to make backup copies of files that hadn't been created yet.
This morning's snapshot is a release candidate for 0.17.2, which I'd
like to get out as soon as possible, but I'll wait a few hours to see
how the snapshot is received.
Thanks for your support.
