No

maybe this is due to my strange setup, SMTP redirected
via ssh from a remote host:port to localhost:1025.....

J connects to the SMTP server successfully

Jun 5 11:36:45 pippone courieresmtpd:
started,ip=[127.0.0.1]

but then I get this

Jun 5 11:36:45 pippone courieresmtpd:
error,relay=127.0.0.1,ident="0",msg="554
Syntax error - your mail software violates RFC
821.",cmd: RCPT TO: ludo@xxx.org

J pops up a message box saying "address not accepted
ludo@xxx.org"

This problem is not reproducible, and there's not enough
information here to track it down, or even prove it's a
problem with j rather than with the user's mail setup.

the problem manifests itself when talking to a courier mta
    server
the bug is the RCPT TO: address not surrounded by <>
    see for ex http://groups.google.com/groups?
    hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=b4ls5n%242u04%241%
    40FreeBSD.csie.NCTU.edu.tw
Courier is not followin RFC 1958 ("3.9 Be strict when sending
and tolerant when receiving."), but the RCPT TO: sent by j is
    not correct =)
excerpt from log file shows that even putting <> manually
around the to: address in j, they do not get sent to the
    SMTP server
