    Glenn M - 2006-04-06

I am going to place all the custom Tiles I draw for Stendhal here, in order to get feedback easier.  I find it better than hijacking the Copyright Infringment thread.

Firstly here are some outfits that are going to be made exculsively for Stendhal.

    The Monk Outfit and Hair

    The Thief Outfit

    The Amazon Outfit

Next we have some regular terrain.
The trees are designed to be placed as a trunk, then foliage, then fruit, meaning you can use just the trunk if you want.  Or just the foliage (looks kinda like a pine tree without foliage)  Or you can combine them to create a more appropriate setup.  I think I prefer the smaller trunk style over the large one (The large one is more similiar to Zelda though)

My house tests.  These are not complete as of yet, I have only designed the main part of the one style (I can't recall what it is, stucco?  Adobe? whatever the old english houses were)  No roofs for now the Zelda roofs will do.

The Serpent Dungeon Entrance, they were designed for Zelda Classic, but will work here nicely.

cool tiles! but one question, should they not be bigger, to fit the current tile sizes? i mean the characters are a little small no?

The tiles in Stendhal are are scaled up with scale2x, unfortunately I cannot get it to work on my end, so yes they would be bigger, but no I can't make them bigger.  It's kinda frustrating, but the instructions for scale2x are very poorly written and most of the questions on the message boards go without answer.  Once I get it to work, the characters and everything will get scaled up so they look more proper.

      Miguel you have mail :)

For the rest of you.  Here are some House tiles I am working on.  I still need the roofs done.  Also with this house you can see a few of the options for it.  I plan on adding one more.  Fieldstone instead of brick, this way it will look better in the country as well as in cities.  And look, a monk is leaving the building.

      http://www.glennsgames.zoomshare.com/album/Stendhal/images/24cce162570d94f413cc8cfcf37c6dee_11445310630/image.png

I have also done some different grass tiles.

      http://www.glennsgames.zoomshare.com/album/Stendhal/images/bb5db8adcafbdb062ab23d3ae1ba20ef_11445315790/image.png

And finally a basic possibility for dungeon floors.  At least until we can come up with something better.

      http://www.glennsgames.zoomshare.com/album/Stendhal/images/0b385d43a47af3a9231b770d6c91e791_11445315670/image.png

Note that all these have been scaled up a bit, but not with Scale2x as I can't get it to work, so they will look a bit nicer in the game than they do here.

As always, comments are very much appreciated.

      Later,
      Glenn

Miguel said we were in need of Decay graphics for the monsters, I am not to good at this, but here is my best shot, it is a generic monster skull with meat, then just bone, then bone and ash.

Next we have my first Palm tree idea, the leaves are seperate from the main tree (not sure why yet) and you can also add coconuts :)

Well, these are some cool tile images you've created.

        Some notes:
        - Clothes:
Stendhal uses a modular 'clothing'-System with seperate images for the head/hair/dress and a base where these are overlayed.
Your class based character are looking great, but they should be combineable with the current character images (just have a look in the jar file in /data/sprites/outfit, replace one set with your images to see how it looks ingame)

        - Trees:
Nice. After scaling them up the trees are 3 tile high and 2 tiles wide, our current trees are 5x5. Maybe we need to scale 'em up so they are 5 tiles high too.
The perspective bugs me a little bit. The 'camera' should be a little higher above the ground...well, I'm no designer so I cannot say much about perspective, but it does look strange when placed in a map.

        - House Design:
We do not have a lot of different house styles, so this would be a great addition. Unfortunatly, when placed in a map it has the same weird 'wrong perspective' look.

        - New House Design:
Wow, what detail. I'm really impressed. The tiles can be shuffled without problems. The bricks should be able to be placed horizontally to create houses with more than one level.

        - Bushes And Tree:
Compare the bushes to the tree to what I mean with 'different perspective'. The bushes have a top view, the tree a front view. It looks good, but is not in the perspective the rest of stendhal is.
Well, we had this perspective thing in the past already, here is an example how it should not look again ;)

        http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/arianne/website/screens/stendhal/20050520_2_stendhal.jpg?rev=1.1&view=markup

        - Palm Tree:
Yep, this is it. This perspective is perfect. The palm too, even without cocconuts.

All in all, great work. Looking forward to see more.

        Regards
        Matthias

        Nice.
I am finally at home. I will start integrating things.

My clothes are examples, they are drawn without the character in there.  They should already work with Stendhal, I talked with Miguel about them early on.  The whole guy is there for an example only.

My big tree design is not meant to replace the current one, but to be a different variation.  Now that I know the size of the current tree, I can begin work on one like it.  I kinda see your point about the perspective, this can be fixed a number of ways.  I am not exactly sure how I want to approach the  issue right now though.  I think shifting the perspective will work best though.  Because of the characters being taller than the current tilest was made for it makes the tiles look squat and short, the character models being used beg for the perspective to be altered to create a better illusion.  For Example, compare theese two screenshots of a Secret of Mana, and A Link to the Past.

      http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Secret_of_Mana_SNES_ScreenShot2.jpg

      http://www.mobygames.com/images/i/48/17/35867.jpeg

The Zelda tiles are the ones we are currently using, however Link is also much more squat, Secret of Mana has a more vertical appearance, this is because of the taller character model.

I find it interesting you think the Palm tree looks good, but the trees don't if anything the palm tree has a larger perspective problem than teh rest of the trees.

The little bush is designed to be a small sort of plant, so therefore will be totally encompassed in the foliage so perspective is hard to place on it.

Something you should keep in mind, is I have not placed any shadows on most things, this will naturally make things look a bit funny.  Let me go an make a couple mock screenshots and we'll see what you think.  Give me a little bit to work on it.

Overall though I really appreciate you taking the time to come in and give me good solid feedback, while I do not agree 100% with all of it, I do truely appreciate it.

      Thanks,
      Glenn

Hmm I made a mockup, like I said I would.  The trees look fine to me.  The house does look too tall though.  You can see it here.

      http://www.glennsgames.zoomshare.com/album/Stendhal/images/b190c4aeb17f95f0eaf45bbfc7cddeff_11447255220/image.png

I am not sure how to fix this problem.  It may have something to do with the Zelda roof, but I think it is the house being the wrong size.  I think halfing the size won't work, 3/4 perhaps? I know the Zelad roof can't work, the roof should not have the back part showing at all, it will help, but the house is defintely too tall.  Grrr, I thought those looked great too.

      • Miguel Angel Blanch Lardin

Yes, I would say 3/4 would do the work.

Here is a new mockup, this one I have shortened the doorway and made a new roof style that seems to be more fitting.  It overhangs the front and sides. You also cannot see the back, as you could with Zelda Roofs.  I think it looks ten times better than before and hopefull you agree, the only thing I think I need to change is the very edges of the walls, and I want to make less Black space between many of the tiles, so to make it so that no more than one line of black space instead of two.

Well, the roof looks better in a perspective way.
But, sorry to say that, it has a geometry issue (just some wrong angles).
I've drawn an image to show what I mean, but unfortunalety my webspace is gone for a while.
Did you subscribed to the public developer mailing list at http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/arianne-devel ?
If so I can send the image to this mailing list.

I won't see a computer over easter, so it can be  monday or tuesday before I can read your answer.

      Regards
      Matthias

Thanks, I appreciate it, now that I have Scale2x working I will be better able to show what they actually look like.  And get them running in the map editor and ready for the next release (or maybe the one after that)

      Thanks,
      Glenn

I think I have finished my custom bushes.  If I can get a general agreement, I will ask Miguel to include them in the next release.

Ok, since glenn made such a nice image, I have tryed replacing the old bushes with these ones. Read more in the mail I sent to the dev list, in that mail you can also download a test tileset that replaces the old bushes ingame.

Not sure why, but when I get the Dev List all pictures never show up properly.

It's a normal mail, and the images is attached as an included file, you need to download them seperately.

I can't, it shows up as text in my Hotmail, wondering if it is because Hotmail doesn't want to recognize the files?  Perhaps it is because of the newsletter layout?  Anyways, perhaps you can email them to me at biokanan at hotmail dot com

BTW, I finished the Amazon and the monks clothing, it just needs scaled and cleaned up a hair more.  Then I will get them uploaded.

Also as a side note, with the clothing and such, do people prefer the black outline, or would you prefer it if the clothing was outlined with a dark version of the color?

      Thanks,
      Glenn
