If someone records a performance with variable tempo, it is not currently possible to easily fit it in measures with the appropriate tempo events. Dragging measures has been suggested as a potential solution
Dragging measure indicators sounds like a workable way forward - a very general solution for a number of situations. If I think of the column sizing tools of Microsoft Office Word as an analogy, it's possible to change a single column width, or, by distributing, to define the outer boundaries of a range of columns and then equalise (distribute) their width. Further down the line, maybe tools of that type could reduce the tedium of measure dragging when the task is to define a new standard tempo (rather than an inserted one-measure rallentando, for example).
