I would like to be able to disable the sharing of torrent files that I
am downloading.

Setting the max-upload-limit to 0 makes the upload limit unrestricted,
so maybe allow setting this to a negative number, or creating a
separate option to completely disable sharing.

BitTorrent choking algorithm is incentive strategy. That is more data you upload more you receive. So if you won't upload, then your download speed may become very slow. That said, why do you want to turn off uploading?

Some bittorrent hosts don't enforce an upload/download ratio.

I understand the rationale behind the incentive strategy, however, my ISP is already clamping down on filesharing.

How about --max-upload-limit=1 ? It is really slow upload.
