    Hello,
i have a little unidentified problem with my dewheater controller; when i want to use it with the windows app,
i can only connect the controller if the power is off; if not, i have a port com error and after that, if i want to reconnect, i have to restart my computer with the heater tape removed..
I made the controller more or less one year ago and at the begining, it didn't happen..
    Thanks for your help
    Pierre

When did this start happening? Did it occur after a recent update of the software or firmware?

What version of windows app? and arduino firmware?

When you mean can connect only if power is off, you mean +12V power?

If you turn on 12V, then connect USB what happens?

Does it work when you connect USB first, then turn on 12V power, you can connect and read values etc?

Do a visual inspection of your board. Have any components come loose? Wires dropped off? Any solder joints look not quite right?

    Do you have a multimeter?
Maybe some connection has come loose?
Like 12V ground is maybe not connected to Arduino Ground (continuity check)?
What is voltage reading at VIN on the controller (should be 9V if you used the overload protection circuit - you should be using the overload protection 15ohm resistor and zener diode).
With 12V power ON and no USB cable, what is voltage reading on 5V pin of controller?
With 12V power ON and no USB cable, are any of the dewstrap LEDS lit?

How did you connect the temperature probes? With stereo audio sockets? Is it possible that you might have accidently removed or plugged them in whilst 12V was ON?

The manual recommends that connection is as follows,
First connect USB cable (this should give you a COMPORT in windows)
    Then turn 12V power ON
Then run windows app and connect to controller
Wait till its connected (about 5s)
    Do a manual update
When all the values have come back, you can start auto logging

To be honest I do not think ive tried it with 12V power ON first then connecting USB.
Sending to my yahoo address could be a faster way to communicate? I only check here about once a day.
    Cheers
    Robert

The latest Windows app and firmware fixes this issue. You can conect 12V first and then the USB if you need and the controller still works.
    Cheers
