#422 Error reading from socket 10035

I'm using Windows 7 x64, running Blender 2.49b with MOSAIC Beta-4.7. I've just uninstalled Aqsis 1.6, and then installed version 1.8. Every time I try to render, I get an error:

Compiled with Python version 2.6.1.
Checking for installed Python... got it!

Piqsl comes up, but it doesn't render. Blender freezes and I have to force quit Aqsis and Blender. I'm not sure what this error means... Please help! Thank you in advance!

    Greetings,

    this also happens when rendering directly from Ayam,
    1.6 works fine, 1.8 fails (on Win32).

    I can start Aqsis 1.8 from Tcl via a plain "exec" just fine;
    what breaks is a special call via "open" that reroutes
    the stdout/stderr channels via the pipe mechanism
    (to get to error messages and progress data for display
    in the Ayam GUI).
