    What is an acceptable size?

there are probably at least two ways to estimate an acceptable download size:
    - compare to similar software
    - estimate download time for a typical user

    5.19 MB - Appsnap (with installer) - 5.19 MB
    22.5 MB - InstallPad (no installer, zipped) - 121 KB + 22.4 MB (.net 2.0) = 22.5 MB
0.79 MB - WPKG (no installer, zipped) - 79 KB
    3.0 MB - 0install (non-windows, no installer) - 210 KB + 660 KB (py-GTK) + 140 KB (Python) + 1.8 MB (GPG)

    13.5 MB/38.4 MB - Appupdater (source) - 220 KB + 11.2 MB (Python) + 2.2 MB (GPG) (optionally, 20.5 MB PyQt + 4.4 MB pywin32)
    2.4 MB - Appupdater (no installer) - 2.4 MB
    17.4 MB - Appupdater (installer) - 17.4 MB

How long is too long for a download time?

I just checked in a fix that compresses the installer down to about 10 MB. I think that should do it.

first of all, it was just a feeling that 20 MB are too much for this application. You know, I (as probably you too) have downloaded many dozens of applications. And my personal impression (based on nothing but experience) is that 5 to 10 MB is what I would expect. On the other side, 100% error for a feeling is really excellent :-)

But you're right. We have to decide it in a more scientific way :-).

There is also another argument. Why would somebody spend 50 minutes downloading Appupdater using a 56kBit modem? Appupdater is all about downloading software.

BTW: it takes 1.5 minutes for me to download 0.9. Probably OK.

And Appupdater seems good enough comparing to others. Appsnap is significantly smaller, but it is also not as good too ;-)

    My conclusion:
I'd lower the priority and if it does not make too much work, we should do this. If not, 17 MB are OK. There are more important things.

I just got the installer down to about 10 MB. That should be under 1 minute for you to download now. Sounds like its OK at this point and we can reinvestigate if things start to bloat above 10 MB again.

I was also wondering how the size of the download would affect other people.

    that's pretty dramatic, nice work!
