I've been using applejack successfully for quite some time. It seems that with the installation of applejack 1.4.3 after completing the "auto" routine and typing reboot, my Mac stalls with the spinning "pizza wheel" after I type in my login password. I must force a shutdown and then reboot. When I do that the Mac starts normally. This is a repeatable event.

OS 10.4.8, 1.25 GHz G4 PowerMac (MDD)

I'm now at OS 10.4.9 and I discovered that if I'm patient and let the "pizza wheel" spin long enough - maybe 45 minutes or more - it goes away and I can log in

And I assume this is only for the first time after running AppleJack. I'm well familiar with startup taking much longer after clearing caches, and I have seen that login takes longer too, but never 45 minutes. very strange.

This is most likely the result of the Mac taking a long time rebuilding all the cache items that were deleted during the AppleJack run.
