[Apc-aa-coders] slice.php3 - leading x's

In slice.php3 around line 311 there is a place where it strips the 
first character from a value got from $items

What I can't figure out, is how the x got there, since the parameters 
to slice don't specify that id's have to have a leading "x"

Any ideas?
